146th Airlift Wing Airmen off to Guam Published Jan. 30, 2015 By Airman 1st Class Madeleine Richards 146AW ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- After 18 hours of flying in our very own C130s and a few pit stops later we have arrived in Guam! Members with the 146th Airlift Wing Civil Engineering Squadron, Security Forces, and Force Support Squadron left January 25 for a TDY about three-weeks long. The first day was an easy day with a seven-hour flight and a layover in Hawaii. Next morning was an 0430 report time and we were off to beautiful Wake Island for refueling and then right back on the plane to our final destination in Guam. I realized pretty quickly how communication to my office back home or just trying to get a hold of someone is significantly more difficult without phone service. I asked Senior Master Sgt. Michael Wood, who was already here upon our arrival, about coordinating our trip. "The biggest challenge is the distance we have to travel, including the international date line, and making sure everything is set up and ready for them when they get here," Wood said. I was able to speak to Senior Airman Mario Lopez Casas with our Civil Engineering Squadron about the trip. He explained that what made the flight over enjoyable for him was the fact that he was with his unit and it's a good way for everyone to get to know each other better on a daily basis. "I expect us to make a lot of progress as far as what we have to get done here and as far as what Guam has to offer. I'm excited to get out and experience it," he said. We flew in to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam on the 27th in the late afternoon. A bus took us to the barracks where we will be staying and we were released for the evening. The next morning started with briefings covering safety, the local area, expectations and rules for staying in the barracks, and then we broke out for lunch. Lunch was amazing because we had been eating box meals up until then. Our Force Support Squadron prepared a hot meal for all of the Airmen. After lunch we took a bus to the work site for the CE to start making a plan of action ready to go the next morning. I can tell they have their work cut out and I'm excited to get some awesome shots tomorrow!
