Lofty Goalz for 146AW Airman Published Dec. 2, 2009 By Maj. Kim Holman 146 AW SAN DIEGO -- Tech. Sgt. Mike Muller of the 146th Airlift Wing is responsible for initiating "Camp Goalz," a camp where young athletes come together with military mentors for a three-day look at life's values and the value of goals. Muller has volunteered much of his time to forming the camp's foundation and purpose. He stresses the importance of goals and the core values embraced by those who serve their country. Muller and a friend originally created Camp Goalz to provide leadership and motivational training for young athletes. Enlisting the help of others along the way, the idea became reality as about 20 high-school aged boys donned rucksacks and marched down the beach with mentors from the Air Guard, Marine Corps and Army. Tents were set up and the group stayed out in the field on a beach near Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Station for two nights. The value of teamwork was put to the test and strengthened through military-style training and physical challenges. Sharing a common goal, the group learned that loyalty unites and bonds teammates toward a common purpose. Accountability, responsibility, trusting in your teammates; these were among the many values discussed throughout the weekend. "The kids went home with a new-found sense of camaraderie, self worth, and a respect for America and the people who serve to protect her," said Muller. "This was a great experience for the team," said one of the camp participants. "I would like to make the camp longer next time."
