UCLA ROTC students visit the 146 AW Published Oct. 4, 2019 By Senior Airman Michelle Ulber 146th Airlift Wing CHANNEL ISLANDS AIR NATIONAL GUARD STATION, Port Hueneme, Calif. -- Approximately 20 students from the University of California Los Angeles ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) visited the 146th Airlift Wing (146 AW) during a base tour at the Channel Islands Air National Guard Station, Port Hueneme, California. Sept. 4, 2019. Students met and spoke with California Air National Guard personnel from various squadrons across the wing, visiting the 146 AW Maintenance Squadron’s aircraft hangar and touring the inside a C-130J aircraft with the 146 AW Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. Designed to expand the public’s knowledge of military operations while promoting positive relationships with the community, base tours provide an opportunity to answering any questions the public may have while giving visitors a closer look at some of the missions the Air National Guard provides to their state and community. Staff Sgt. Elijah Managan, a recruiter with the 146 AW, travels with the student’s during their visit as a tour guide, as part of the base’s goal of connecting the general public with the missions of the Air National Guard. “The students were shown what it takes to accomplish our missions. We took them around the base, where we showed them what we do for training and what our mission means to their community,” said Managan. “For these students, introductions to what jobs are available in the Air Force and the Air National Guard are vital because many of the have an interest in joining the military after they graduate.” Said Managan. Capt. Solveig Listerud, Executive Officer 146 AW, provides multiple base tour’s during the year to the general public, enjoys her time spent interacting with the visitors and believes the tours help inform the community of all the positive work the Air National Guard is doing. “Base tours are a great way for us to connect to the community. We introduce a new world of military capability to people that would otherwise not know about what we do.” said Listerud. “The students are so excited to be here, they are very eager to learn about what we do and happy to experience it as much as they’re able to,” said Listerud.
