At least one person is dead after a fighter jet used for training and bound for the Point Mugu Naval Air Station crashed in Ventura County, a county fire spokesman said.

Ventura County Fire spokesman Steve Swindle said the Hawker Hunter trainer jet went down near Hueneme and Potrero roads, not far from Cal State Channel Islands in Camarillo.

He said the aircraft, which is used during pilot training, was en route to Point Mugu. The crash occurred about 12:15 p.m. The Ventura County Sheriff's Department said dispatchers initially received multiple reports of an explosion.

The area where the plane went down is an open space with no buildings. Authorities said debris from the plane was strewn around the area.

It is unclear at this point if there are any other fatalities or injuries.

The Ventura County Sheriff's Department, Ventura County Fire Department and military officials are on the scene.
