Scholarships available for military spouses
Operation Homefront and the Women's Self Worth Foundation are proud to announce the Saban Military Wife Educational Scholarship. The scholarship award is offered to wives of uniformed service members to attend vocational training programs in the medical field. The scholarship funds may be used to assist with tuition expenses only -- no books or other fees included. All funds are paid directly to the educational institution.
Grant recipients will be required to participate in twelve (12) hours of community service for each year in which they are recipients of grant funds. A recipient may choose any activity she would like to do, as long as the service is performed on a voluntary basis for individuals and/or groups beyond her immediate family. Each grant recipient will be required to submit written confirmation that she has completed her community service requirement at the end of the relevant calendar year.
Applications will be accepted from March 1, 2011 - May 1, 2011. The scholarships will be awarded to recipients on July 1, 2011. Selection for the scholarships will be made by a panel of judges, and the award will be scored in two areas: the applicant's response to the essay question and her commitment to volunteerism.
Please go to www.operationhomefront.net for more details.
Operation Purple Teen Youth Camp applications now available
The National Military Family Association's Operation Purple camps are a time for having fun, making friends, and reminding military kids that they are the Nation's youngest heroes. The mission of the Operation Purple program is to empower military children and their families to develop and maintain healthy and connected relationships, in spite of the current military environment. They do this through a variety of means, including the healing and holistic aspect of the natural world.
The program is joint or "purple"-- and open to children and families of active duty, National Guard or Reserve service members from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service and NOAA. The Operation Purple program
includes camps for teens, family retreats at the national parks, and camps geared to address the needs of children and families of our nations wounded service members.
The 2011 Operation Purple camp applications are now available at http://www.militaryfamily.org/our-programs/ operation-purple/2011-camps/
Social Networks helping in Japan disaster relief
The earthquake in Japan has helped highlight the role technology can play in a disaster. Smartphone/iPhone applications such as QuakeWatch, Disaster Alert, Emergency Radio, and more could provide you with important information during a disaster when other forms of communication may become disabled. Social networking apps and sites such as Facebook and Twitter can also serve as a means of communication after a disaster, for family members and friends to let each other know they are safe. Check out the apps that are available for your phone as part of your emergency preparedness efforts!
