The 146th Airlift Wing is proud to recognize Staff Sergeant Jeffrey Strong as August's Featured Airman of the Month. As a mechanic for the 146th Logistics Readiness Squadron, Staff Sgt. Strong uses his experience and great attitude to help mentor junior enlisted while getting the tasks done quickly and efficiently. Congratulations Staff Sgt. Strong!

1. When did you enlist in the Air Force, how long have you been in the service?
I enlisted in the Air Force in September 2009. I joined the active duty Army in January 1992 as a Bradley Hull Mechanic. I was stationed in Korea (92- 93) Camp Casey 5/20 Inf Mech, Fort Knox 1/16 Cav (93-97), Schweinfurt Germany 1st ID. 1-26 INF Mech (97-00), Fort Irwin Ca (00-01). Joined the California Army National Guard 1-149 Armor Seaside, California and was deployed to Operation Nobel Eagle II / III. I separated from the Army Guard in 2004.

2. What motivated you to enlist in the Air Force?
I was drawn to the Air Guard because I wanted to do something different and complete the time for a second retirement. I enlisted as a C-130 Crew Chief enjoyed learning about the air frame in the ISO Docks. The tech school was really over booked and was not scheduled to attend tech school for approximately 2 years after my enlistment. I met with Chief Quijano and told him about my experience and he said the tech school was in Port Hueneme. I said "When can I transfer squadrons and get to school?"

3. How has being an Airman changed your point of view on life?
My time in service has really made me hold precious the little things after being in parts of the world that the little things we take for granted would be a luxury to others.

4. What's the most important lesson you've learned in the military?
Pride and service.

5. What is your favorite part/memory about the Air Force?
Well although my time in the Air Force has been brief it was when my whole shop from Major Quinteros to Chief Quijano and all the full timers showed up for my graduation from tech school.

6. If you could deploy anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Korea, because I would love to visit my first duty station at Camp Casey Korea.

7. If you could choose any Air Force job, which would it be? Why?
When I signed the papers to be assigned to the LRS Vehicle maintenance I felt I was where I belonged. I felt like I was back home... I have never been so openly welcomed into a section as I have been accepted into the vehicle maintenance family. So to answer your question I am where I belong because I feel I need to get satisfaction from the job I do in the service. The feeling of satisfaction I receive from bringing in a vehicle that has a deficiency and to drive it out and send it back to the fight where ever that might be.

8. Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Sunnyvale California.

9. What is your civilian job?
I am a Federal Correctional Officer at the US Penitentiary at Lompoc.

10. What are your hobbies?
I like to hunt and spend time with my family.

11. What would people be surprised to know about you?
I wish I could go into the back woods and build a cabin and live in the woods.
