Maj. Gen. David S. Baldwin, Adjutant General for the California National Guard, issued the following statement today regarding the crash of a North Carolina Air National Guard C-130J aircraft in South Dakota:

"The Airmen and Soldiers of the California National Guard were grief-stricken in learning of Sunday's tragedy involving the crash of a North Carolina Air National Guard firefighting aircraft in South Dakota. We extend our condolences and prayers to the families of the brave Airmen who were killed or injured in an effort to protect their fellow citizens. Knowing that military service involves personal risk makes this tragedy no less painful for those of us who consider these Airmen our brothers in arms. We will honor their sacrifice by redoubling our effort to control the wildfires that threaten the lives and welfare of so many in our nation. "
