Compliance Inspection team arrives!
"We're here to validate readiness, capability and compliance," said Colonel Steven Legrand, Compliance Inspection team chief. Col. Legrand arrived with his team of 42 inspectors Friday afternoon after a long five hour flight from Scott Air Force Base, Ill. to the clear skies and warm weather of Channel Islands. Making a gesture of a 'growing' Pinocchio nose, Legrand joked "We are trying to make this process easier and less painful!" He promised the inspection would be tough but fair and that long briefings would be consolidated and kept short.

The team will be on base until mid-week and will be conducting inspections throughout different areas of the wing. All inspectors will be parking in the first row of spaces in the south parking lot behind building 100. These spaces will be marked with cones and signs so please make sure to leave the spots open for their vehicles. The IG team work station will be in the wing communication's classroom in case anyone needs to locate their inspector. Be sure to render all customs and courtesies and best of luck.

Operation Free Ride
Horses4Heroes was founded by the Knott family in 2006 to say "thank you" to the men and women whose daily sacrifices keep us safe and free. Today, their organization has grown to include 130 facilities in 38 states plus
Canada. On May 19, Armed Forces Day, the Knott family is launching Operation Free Ride, a national initiative to introduce horses and horseback riding to our military heroes and their families. The Knott family has partnered with the Armed Forces Foundation to make horseback riding part of their MWR/Classic Outdoor Sports programs. They also work with Operation Military Kids, Nevada National Guard and the VA.

Recently, Horses4Heroes was "hired" by the Nevada National Guard and to put on spring break camps in support of April the Month of the Military Child. They have entertained 135 kids at four day camps in Las Vegas and Reno.
They have also partnered with Real Warriors and have supported Blue Star and Gold Star Moms/Wives/Families. They have also been profiled in Western Horseman, Horse & Rider and Horse Illustrated as well as local and regional publications throughout the country.

VA Mobile Bus to be at July UTA
The VA will be here on station Sunday July 8 to do another mobile enrollment. Members who have been deployed or have never registered for the VA are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. They will be able to assist in filling out initial enrollment forms as well as performing initial intake physicals. Members who sign up will need to bring a copy of a DD214 to give to the VA representatives.

AGR's are not able to enroll with the VA at this time, but they are welcome to come on a walk in basis to speak with the benefits administrator if they would like. Please contact Julie Morency if you would like to make an appointment.

Service Members, Families, Get Free Pass to National Parks
Service members and their families will be able to enter all of America's national parks free of charge for a year under an initiative announced today. The pass - the America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Annual Pass, which normally costs $80 - will become available to service members and their dependents on Armed Forces Day, May 19. The passes allow the holder and passengers in a single private vehicle access to some 2,000 sites that charge per vehicle. At sites where entrance fees are charged per person, it covers the pass owner and three adults age 16 and older.

Military personnel can get the passes at any national park or wildlife refuge that charges an entrance fee by showing their military ID. Family members also will be able to obtain their own pass, even if the service member is deployed or if they are traveling separately. The pass will be accepted at National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Army Corps sites that charge entrance or standard amenity fees. The free pass will be made available for activated members of the National Guard and reserves, but not for military veterans or retirees, who have other opportunities for free or reduced admission, such as the National Park Service's "Access Pass" or a seniors pass for those 62 and older.

The free pass initiative is part of the "Joining Forces" campaign First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, launched last year to rally Americans around supporting service members and their families.
